Agent checkpoints

Keep people meaningfully in control where autonomous workflows need human confirmation.

The problem

Agents can execute long sequences of actions. At consequential moments, the system may need evidence that a real person reviewed or authorized the next step.

The proposed approach

Insert a human-presence checkpoint before the irreversible action. Present a clear request to the person, collect an explicit result, and have the server evaluate that result before proceeding.

The aim

A human-centered checkpoint design that separates an agent’s capabilities from a person’s participation.

Five considerations

  1. Define which actions need human involvement.
  2. Make the action and its consequence understandable.
  3. Complete the participation check.
  4. Apply the outcome on the server.
  5. Record only the event information needed for audit.
